I’ve always grown flowers, dahlias and many others for cutting, but typically I plant them in the perennial borders to save space in the vegetable garden. When I do this, I am reluctant to cut the flowers because they bring so much to the borders. That’s why this year, I decided to plant the dahlias in the vegetable garden. The beauty below is called ‘Knock Out’, another favorite is ‘Miss Molly’. A friend also gifted me with five new varieties of dahlias, they’re just starting to bloom. My collection continues to grow. One of the great things about dahlias is that you can dig the tubers, store them over winter, and replant them the following spring. The beauty is, they will usually need divided, which means you have extras to share with friends, who wouldn’t want free dahlias?
Now that I have flowers growing as a crop in the vegetable, there are so blooms I’m happy to cut them for bouquets. I’ve been enjoying flowers in the house and have had more than enough to give to others. Here are a few of the bouquets I’ve cut over the past few weeks.
Some of my favorite filler flowers are ‘Green Gold’ burplurem, ‘Red Rubin’ purple basil, and anise hyssop. This year I added delphiniums to the garden, which have been lovely as a cut flower, but it needs cut early to reduce shedding of spent blossoms.
Many bouquets are simply dahlias cut en masse and put in a variety of jars. This saves time as there is no arrangement needed, they are cut and put directly into jars and then placed on the sideboard. I also like that it’s easy to swap them out as they all start to droop at the same time. There’s no need to pull out some flowers while leaving others.
The sunflowers started blooming a month ago, but sadly, the squirrels have found them and I was only able to pick a few bouquets before they decimated the entire crop.
Having flowers in the house certainly makes me happy and it is a kind of luxury that few of us could afford if we didn’t have our own gardens from which to cut them. My dining room looks like a florist shop most of the time, which I can’t say is a bad thing, especially this time of year when the days get noticeably shorter and darker with a chill sneaking into the evening air.
